7 Types of Rest: Developing a Life of Balance and Peace

It’s easy and common to think of rest as simply a break from work or an afternoon nap. However, rest is much more than just physical recovery. As Christians, we are reminded in Scripture that rest is not just for the body, but for the mind, heart, senses, and spirit as well. God designed us originally in a state of “shalom” (being whole, with no unmet needs). After the fall of man, now we feel the need for rest—something that is vital not only to our physical health but also to our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

In this blog post, we will explore the seven types of rest, all of which are essential for Christians to live a life of balance and peace. Let’s dive into how you can rest more holistically, and ultimately strengthen your mental health, by embracing all forms of rest that God has provided.

Physical Rest: Even Jesus needed to rest

“Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.” (John 4:6)

Physical rest is the most common form of rest people think about, but it’s also the most foundational. When we prioritize sleep, proper nutrition, and relaxation, we are caring for the bodies that God holds as precious also.

How to Rest Physically:
– Observe reserved times away from work and labor.
– Establish a healthy sleep routine.
– Take breaks during the day to stretch, walk, or simply sit quietly.

Mental Rest: Still Your Mind

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10, NIV)

Mental rest involves quieting the constant noise in our minds. In a world full of distractions and endless thoughts, finding peace of mind can feel like a challenge. But God calls us to “be still” and know He is in control. This can help us surrender our worries and find rest in His presence. This rest allows us to recharge mentally and refocus on what truly matters.

How to Rest Mentally:
– Set aside time for reflection and prayer, allowing your mind to release anxiety and embrace God’s truth and peace.
– Practice mindfulness and meditation on God’s Word.
– Take a break from social media and digital distractions.

Emotional Rest: Letting Go of Emotional Burdens

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NIV)

Emotional rest happens when we give ourselves permission to feel and release emotions. Holding onto unprocessed emotions—such as anger, guilt, or sadness—can be draining and damaging to our mental health. Jesus invites us to cast our burdens on Him, offering emotional restoration.

How to Rest Emotionally:
– Engage in honest conversations with trusted friends or a counselor.
– Practice forgiveness, releasing grudges or negative emotions.
– Cry out to God in prayer, knowing He wants to heal your heart.

Social Rest: Setting Boundaries and Seeking Healthy Relationships

“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” (1 Corinthians 15:33, NIV)

Social rest involves balancing your interactions and setting boundaries. While relationships are a source of joy and support, they can also drain us when we’re constantly giving of ourselves. In order to preserve our mental health, we need to find rest in healthy, life-giving relationships and know when to step away.

How to Rest Socially:
– Limit time with those who create a toxic environment or seem to drain your energy.
– Foster deeper, more meaningful connections with those who uplift you.
– Set boundaries to protect your emotional and mental well-being.

Sensory Rest: Taking a Break from Overstimulation

“The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing.” (Psalm 23:1, NIV)

Our senses are constantly being bombarded by the world around us—bright lights, loud noises, and even emotional stimuli. Sensory overload can lead to stress and exhaustion. Sensory rest is about taking a break from overstimulation to find peace and stillness.

How to Rest Sensory:
– Spend time in nature, away from the noise of urban daily life.
– Take quiet moments to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let go of external distractions.
– Create a peaceful environment with soft lighting and calming sounds.

Creative Rest: Reconnecting with Your Creative Spirit

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIV)

As beings made in the image of a Creator, we are inherently creative. Creative rest allows us to reconnect with that divine aspect of ourselves. It involves stepping away from demanding creative work and giving our minds space to breathe and dream. God challenges us to transform our minds by not getting too caught up in the ways of this world.

How to Rest Creatively:
– Engage in activities that inspire creativity, like art, writing, or music.
– Take a break from projects and allow yourself the freedom to rest without pressure.
– Spend time enjoying God’s creation to rekindle your own creative energy.

Spiritual Rest: Finding Peace in God’s Presence

“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31, NIV)

Religious effort is very tiresome and is fruitless. Spiritual rest is the deepest and most fulfilling type of rest. Realize Jesus did the work on the cross to save us from the restlessness brought by sin.  God invites us to fully surrender to God, trusting Him to guide and restore us. This rest replenishes and reminds us that our ultimate source of strength comes from Him. Without spiritual rest, all other forms of rest are incomplete.

How to Rest Spiritually:
– Attend worship services and connect with other believers as we aren’t meant to renew our strength alone.
– Deepen the truth of the gospel message and evaluate if you’re swimming in religiosity. Spend quiet time in prayer, listening for God’s voice.
– Spend time in prayer, meditate on Scripture, await God’s voice.

Embracing All Forms of Rest

God cares about our whole selves: body, mind, and spirit. It’s an essential part of maintaining our mental health and living a life that enjoys and glorifies God. When we embrace all seven types of rest, we are better equipped to be used by Him, love others because He loves us, and experience peace even in times of chaos.

Remember, rest is not only about doing less; it’s about creating space to reconnect with God, recharge, and restore every part of who you are – taste of restoring shalom. Keep learning howf to rest, knowing that in doing so, you are fulfilling God’s design for your life and health.

Renew & Revive Spiritual Group Sign Up

This Renew & Revive (R&R) group is a program established by the team at Fully Health to provide a comprehensive approach to address all our needs – physical, mental, and spiritual. Through attending these complimentary group sessions, you will learn about the good news of Jesus Christ and how God will intervene during our journey toward achieving healing and greatest potential.

All individuals 18+ are welcome to attend! You do not need to be a Fully Health client or patient to attend. This service is free of charge. Please note, these sessions are not a clinical service. You may come and go as you like. We would be happy to have you whenever you may be available to join!

Wednesdays 7:30 – 8:30 pm on Zoom

What to expect from R&R
– To deeply understand, believe, and enjoy the Gospel, and know who I am
– To be able to have any question answered without judgment. For example, “Why am I struggling so much even though I have faith?” and “If I seek psychiatric treatment, does that mean my faith is small?”
– To experience the ability to fight the spiritual battle in life, especially regarding mental health struggles around me
– If Jesus is the Christ who solved my fundamental spiritual problem that led to all the “bad fruits” of life, then He is the answer to any other problem (mental and/or physical) that I may face on this earth.
